Adriatic Wines – The Right Choice
Croatian and Bosnia and Herzegovina wines are becoming more and more famous in the world market, which is not surprising, given its high level and individual character, which has developed over several millennia. Grape vines appeared on the territory as early as the 4th century BC. Thanks to the Greek colonists, further winemaking developed under the influence of the Ancient Roman Empire and the Venetian Republic. This foundation largely determined the style of modern Croatian and Bosnia and Herzegovina wines, for the manufacture of which even today native grape varieties are used, which are not found anywhere else in the world. However, the countries have also established the production of drinks from international varieties, which have taken root well in the favourable local climate.
Grape plantations occupy 6% of agricultural land in Croatia, which corresponds to about 60 thousand hectares. More than 1,000 companies are engaged in the production of wine products, supplying about 700 types of wines for sale. The annual volume of wine production in Croatia exceeds 60 million litres, but only 5% of this amount is exported. Croats drink most of the drinks themselves – according to this indicator, the country ranks 3rd in Europe. A significant share of wine production is bought up by tourists; some specially come to the country as part of the so-called oenological tours to visit famous wineries and taste Croatian wine. However, the elegant and sophisticated style of drinks produced in Croatia did not leave authoritative experts indifferent. In recent years, Croatian wines have received more and more gold and silver medals at international competitions and received admiring reviews from the jury.
The products of Croatian winemakers are included in the ranking of the London magazine Decanter, which is a guide to the world’s most prestigious wine brands.
